Facebook photo-scanning suit is a multibillion-dollar threat

April 17, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Facebook may have to pay a real price for claims it invaded users’ privacy: billions of dollars.

A federal judge ruled Monday that millions of the social network’s users can proceed as a group with claims that its photo-scanning technology violated an Illinois law by gathering and storing biometric data without their consent. Damages could be steep—a fact that wasn’t lost on the judge, who was unsympathetic to Facebook’s arguments for limiting its legal exposure.

The case dates back to 2015, long before Facebook became mired in controversy over revelations that millions of its users’ private information fell into the hands of British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. It’s rare for consumers to win class-action status in privacy cases. In Facebook’s history, most such cases don’t get that far.

Apple Music for journalism? Apple plans paid subscription service for news

April 17, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Apple plans to integrate recently acquired magazine app Texture into Apple News and debut its own premium subscription offering, according to people familiar with the matter. The move is part of a broader push by the iPhone maker to generate more revenue from online content and services.

The company agreed last month to buy Texture, which lets users subscribe to more than 200 magazines for $9.99 a month. Apple cut about 20 Texture staff soon after, according to one of the people.

The world’s largest technology company is integrating Texture technology and the remaining employees into its Apple News team, which is building the premium service. An upgraded Apple News app with the subscription offering is expected to launch within the next year, and a slice of the subscription revenue will go to magazine publishers that are part of the program, the people said. They asked not to be identified discussing private plans. Apple declined to comment.

Facebook answers some questions Zuckerberg didn’t in testimony

April 16, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Mark Zuckerberg spent much of his Congressional testimony making the case that Facebook users have control over their data. But what about the data the social network collects from people who don’t even have accounts?

In Congress last week, Zuckerberg said Facebook needed to track people who weren’t members for “security purposes.” In a follow-up blog post Monday, the company laid out plenty of business reasons to do it too.

Facebook said other websites and apps use its services to let people quickly create accounts and later share content on their Facebook pages, like news articles. Behind the scenes, Facebook also helps some sites and apps track their performance and run ads from Facebook advertisers.

Google’s Facebook copycat moves put company in privacy hot seat

April 16, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

No one at Google envied Mark Zuckerberg last week as he was being grilled by Congress. But for years, they certainly coveted the personal data that made Facebook a formidable digital ad player. And the strategies they set to compete have now placed Google squarely in the line of fire against the world’s largest social-media company.

The House and Senate questioned Zuckerberg for about 10 hours after revelations that data on millions of Facebook users got into the hands of Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm that worked on President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The hearings centered on the digital information and machinery Facebook built up to serve targeted ads. No company has a bigger business doing that—except Google.

When the grilling ended, Democrats and some Republicans called for broad privacy regulation, putting Google on the hot seat next to Zuckerberg.

Is your data giving you a clear customer picture?

April 16, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Brand teams get fixated on the latest data trends, including marketing measurement optimization and unified analytics. It makes sense — after all, there is increasing demand for accountability, with the business impact of every impression, exposure and click subject to scrutiny. But while companies are right to invest more on the analytics to measure cross-channel engagement across every campaign, placement and creative execution, the focal point of those data-driven efforts often gets lost.

The customer has to come first. To do that, customer-obsessed brands need to take a hard look at the quality of their data.

Unfortunately, today’s data strategy and measurement often work backward. We concentrate on measuring channel, platform and publisher performance, which makes seeing what the customer is doing across those touch points harder to piece together.

Comcast to include Netflix subscriptions in its cable packages

April 13, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Comcast will add Netflix to subscription packages across the country, giving the world’s largest streaming platform another way to boost its viewer base in the U.S., its biggest market.

Customers, who can already watch Netflix series such as “House of Cards” or “Stranger Things” using the Comcast X1 cable box, will now be able to pay for it directly through a Comcast bundle, the two companies said Thursday in an emailed statement.

The cable giant once viewed Netflix as a problem for the cable platform, but the Philadelphia-based Comcast has since embraced the streaming service as a way to retain customers. Almost half of all people with an X1 box use Netflix, Philadelphia-based Comcast said.

Last year Intel, the PC maker best known to the wider world for its “Intel Inside” tagline, decided to pivot from being a PC-centric company to a data-centric one. It has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, the internet of things, drones, autonomous cars and more. Those data-centric businesses made up 47 percent of revenues in fiscal 2017, underscoring the diminished importance of the PC to its business.

“We need to make sure the future tech buyers of the world understand we’re not just a chip in a PC,” says Intel’s Alyson Griffin, who is charged with telling that story. “We need to make sure we’re not stuck inside a PC.”
