Facebook to show pre-roll video ads in more places

April 20, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

By glsoane@adage.com(Garett Sloane)

Facebook will show pre-roll ads—commercials ahead of videos—in more places on the social network.

On Friday, the company revealed the expansion of pre-roll ads, a format once banned by CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself, in a blog post about “best practices and updates on video and monetization.”

One of the ways for media companies to make money on Facebook is by showing ads in their videos and splitting the revenue. Last year, AdAge reported that Facebook would start testing pre-roll ads in Watch, its new video hub with serialized programming produced by media companies and entertainment studios.

Google, Twitter pressed to follow Facebook into Senate hearings

April 20, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

The CEOs of Google and Twitter may be next to follow Mark Zuckerberg into a gauntlet of congressional hearings.

Senate Commerce Chairman John Thune said he’s considering another public hearing on data privacy and spoke with representatives of Alphabet Inc.’s Google this week, suggesting the company send CEO Sundar Pichai to answer questions.

“I’ve told them I’d like to have them come in and talk to us about data privacy and maybe some of the other social media platforms as well,” Thune says. “It’ll help to really know what they’re doing, and it’ll help and instruct what we might be thinking about doing. We haven’t scheduled anything yet, but we’re having conversations with them.”

P&G ends its YouTube boycott after more than a year

April 20, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Procter & Gamble, one of world’s biggest advertisers, kept its ads off YouTube for more than a year because of concerns about inappropriate content. Now it’s returning to the video site, but a lot more selectively than before.

The consumer-goods giant told its brands this week they can buy spots on YouTube, according to the Cincinnati-based company. P&G, which owns household names like Crest and Tide, stopped spending on YouTube in March 2017 following an outcry over extremist and other disturbing videos. The boycott spread to other marquee marketers, prompting Alphabet Inc.’s Google to overhaul YouTube policies and hire more human moderators to clean up the service. Other marketers such as Verizon ended their boycotts more quickly.

“We paused advertising, and for the past year, we’ve worked extensively with YouTube to improve brand safety,” Tressie Rose, a P&G spokeswoman, said in a statement. “We now feel the right measures are in place for P&G brands to have the option to advertise on YouTube.”

‘And It’s Gone’: A cryptocurrency startup’s joke throws investors into a panic

April 19, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

A cryptocurrency startup panicked investors Wednesday as the founder tweeted a picture from the beach and just three words populated the website: “And It’s Gone.”

A day later, Savedroid is back, but investors are almost as angry now as when they thought their money was gone.

“VERY bad idea for a fintech to make fun of investors. All trust gone, can never trust again,” wrote @CryptoCharge in reaction to a video Savedroid founder Yassin Hankir posted Thursday, saying, “We are still here, not gone and, actually, never gone.”

Drudge Report’s ad broker discusses innovation — no, really! — and the brand-safety blues

Last October when Time magazine compiled its “most influential websites of all time,” it put the Drudge Report report squarely at No. 8. Eight! The conservative political news site hovers high in the top ten list of U.S. media publishers of the Marketers’ Intelligence Blog, too.

And it’s true. Personally speaking, when an Ad Age story finds its way onto Matt Drudge’s bare-bones curated list of news links, the traffic spike is eye-popping. It’s drive-by traffic, sure, the quality of which is maybe questionable. It yields a few weird comments on our site. But the impact is undeniable: The badly designed Web 1.0 relic is a traffic monster, still. In 2018.

Never say never: A Q&AA with Scooter Braun

April 19, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Scooter Braun is best known as the manager of Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Psy and Ariana Grande, and founder of School Boy Records. But increasingly, the über-manager has been expanding his SB Projects entertainment and media company to include projects like the CBS procedural “Scorpion.” (Its 2011 Bieber documentary, “Never Say Never,” grossed $100 million worldwide.) Last month, Braun announced he has teamed with David Maisel, founding chairman of Marvel Studios, to form Mythos Studios. Together, the two aspire to make “hit comic-book movie franchises in live-action and animated formats.” We may be oversaturated with superhero movies these days, but if there’s one thing Braun’s career has suggested so far, it’s that it would be foolish to second-guess him. He sat down for a chat about how he got here. Our conversation has been edited.

Your first sales job was brokering fake IDs at college. What did you learn from that?

I was always kind of hustling. I had good ideas on how to market stuff. What I learned from party promotion was an even better lesson: In Atlanta [where Braun attended Emory University for two years before dropping out], I was in a cash business. Your word was your bond. If you broke your word, you had nothing to stand on. That taught me that if you made the wrong deal, you still had to stand by your word. Your reputation will set you up for your next six deals.

Search ads for ‘GDPR’ surge as strict new rules near

April 18, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

Companies offering help in meeting the European Union’s onrushing General Data Protection Regulation are bidding up the price on search ads for its acronym, GDPR, ahead of its arrival May 25.

GDPR requirements are complex, and each country is likely to have different rules because the E.U. has left some 70 clauses open to interpretation. Those found in violation of GDPR face fines that amount to 4 percent of their revenue or $25 million, whichever is greater.

And even if you’re a U.S.-based publisher that sees 2 percent of online traffic from Latvia, you need to be GDPR compliant. The same applies to vendors that collect data from any of the 28 countries that make up the European Union.

NBA video-game league to stream exclusively on Amazon’s Twitch

April 18, 2018 By Marketing News Leave a Comment

The National Basketball Association’s new professional video-game league has signed a multiyear broadcast contract with Twitch, the streaming service owned by Amazon.

The NBA 2K League, a joint venture with Take-Two Interactive Software, will live-stream all its video basketball games free through Twitch, the NBA said in a statement Wednesday. That’s as many as 199 games throughout the season, including tournaments, playoffs and the finals. Games will also be free on demand after their conclusion.

Twitch, which has 15 million daily active users, will have exclusive broadcast rights in the 2018 season. Terms of the deal weren’t announced.
